In the dedicated training center, dementia- specific education will be provided for Team Members in all departments. Classes offered throughout the year are designed to engage the learner in various topics relating to dementia and assist them in providing excellent care to Residents. Additionally, ongoing in-service trainings and onsite mentoring will be provided in an effort to prevent burnout and maximize Team Member retention. Our classes are co-led by Mary Schreiber, our Memory Support Resource Coordinator, and Travis Adams, Manager of Cedar Brook, our current memory support community.

Foundational Classes

We believe evidenced-based educational opportunities for team members is the foundation for providing best care practices for those living with dementia.

Based on the Alzheimer’s Association Habilitation Therapy model, our Person Centered Dementia Care trainings are required for all Supportive Living team members who provide direct care to residents with dementia, and well as being available to all team members who would like to learn more about positive approaches for individuals with memory issues. In this model of support we value each person as a unique individual, honoring their history, values, interests and preferences. The focus is on what the person can do now rather than any lost abilities.

Topics covered in our Person Centered Dementia Care in an 8-hour session include an understanding of Alzheimer’s and dementia, communication skills, a positive approach to personal care, behavior as communication, and the importance of the physical environment and engagement. A 4-hour session, with certain topics highlighted, is provided for departments that do not provide direct care, however do have regular contact with individuals with dementia. These departments include Culinary Services, Housekeeping, Property Management, and Security.

Another critical component of the training is to understand the importance of communication between team members and family members of individuals living with dementia, and knowing resources and support opportunities that can be offered.

Certified Nursing Assistants (CNA) also attend this class immediately following their graduation from the Pennsylvania Nurse Aide Training Competency Evaluation Program held at Willow Valley Communities.

It is important to note that all Team Members working in Supportive Living are mandated by the Department of Health to have memory support training upon hire and annually. To exceed the Department of Health requirements, Willow Valley Communities requires that Team Members working in Memory Support Communities complete eight hours of memory support training per year.
